Dixie Fish Co.

Dixie Fish Co. occupies a 1937 fish house on the San Carlos Island side of the pass, and they have kept it looking that way: open sides, tin roof, picnic tables, ceiling fans and the shrimp fleet tied up right outside. It is one of our favorite places to send guests for a first-night dinner because it is unmistakably here and nowhere else.

Everything is made from scratch, and the seafood comes off the boats you can see from your table. Peel-and-eat pink Gulf shrimp are the thing to order, along with blackened grouper, fish tacos, smoked fish dip and a very good key lime pie. Cold beer, rum drinks and live music most afternoons and evenings round it out. It is casual in the best way; come straight from the beach.

It sits next door to Bonita Fish Company, its sister restaurant, so the two share a lively dockside strip. Go for a late lunch or an early dinner to avoid the longest waits, and try to time it for sunset over the bay. Five minutes from the house by car, or arrive by boat if you have rented one.
