Sometimes you want to get off the island for a meal that has nothing to do with grouper sandwiches. El Sabor de Puebla is a family-run Mexican restaurant on the mainland in Fort Myers, and it cooks the food of Puebla, the state that gave the world mole poblano, cemitas and chiles en nogada, rather than the Tex-Mex you’ll find nearer the beach.
Order the mole. It is dark, complex, slightly sweet and slightly smoky, and it is the reason to come. The cemita sandwiches on sesame rolls are another Pueblan specialty, and the tacos, sopes and weekend specials are all made the way they would be at home. Prices are very fair, portions are generous and the salsas are made fresh. Ask what is on special; the staff are happy to steer you.
It is a no-frills spot in an unglamorous strip, which is usually a good sign. Go for lunch or an early dinner and pair it with a grocery run on the way back to the house. About a fifteen-minute drive from Siesta Isles, depending on the bridge traffic.
