Guided Kayak Tour

The Gulf side of the island gets the attention, but the bay side is where the wildlife lives. Estero Bay is a shallow aquatic preserve laced with mangrove islands and tunnels, and a guided kayak trip is the easiest way into it. Local outfitters run tours from the Mound House on the bay, from Lovers Key State Park and from a few marinas along Main Street, and a guide will get you into the quiet channels you’d never find on your own.

Expect to paddle at an easy pace for two to three hours. You will very likely see dolphins and wading birds, and in the warmer months manatees. Guides are good at reading tides and pointing out what you are looking at, which makes the difference between a nice paddle and a memorable one. Sunset and moonlight tours are offered in season and are worth the booking.

No experience needed and stable sit-on-top kayaks are the norm, so it works for families. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat. Book a day or two ahead in winter and spring when spots go quickly. If you’d rather go alone, ask us about launching straight from the dock at the house.
