Just south of the island, across the bridge at the end of Estero Blvd, Lovers Key is a state park spread over four small barrier islands, and it is about as close to untouched as this coast gets. Two miles of beach, no buildings behind it, and a network of walking and biking trails winding through the mangroves and back bays.
The wildlife is the reason to go. Dolphins cruise the pass, manatees show up in the warmer months in the canals and Estero Bay, and the shorebirds, ospreys and the occasional bald eagle are almost guaranteed. Kayak and bike rentals are available inside the park, and paddling the sheltered mangrove channels is one of the best ways to see it all up close.
There is a small entry fee per vehicle. A tram runs from the parking area to the beach if you do not fancy the walk. Go early in the morning for the calmest water and the most active wildlife, and bring your own shade and drinks. It is an easy day out from the house and a proper change of pace from the main beach.
