Tucked among the restaurants on Fisherman’s Wharf on San Carlos Island, this small non-profit science center is easy to miss and well worth an hour. It sits right beside the working shrimp docks, and much of it is about exactly that: how the pink Gulf shrimp end up on your plate, the boats that catch them, and the sea life that shares the water with them.
Inside you’ll find touch tanks, live local species, shell and fossil collections and exhibits on the estuary, sea turtles and the shrimping industry. It is very hands-on and staffed by volunteers who genuinely like talking about the bay, which makes it a good stop with kids. On Wednesday mornings in season they run a guided walking tour of the shrimp docks that ends at the center, and it is one of the more interesting things you can do on the island for very little money.
It is a short visit, so pair it with lunch at one of the fish houses next door. Check current opening days before you go, as hours are seasonal and it is run by volunteers.
