Tucked on the calmer back-bay side of the island just under the Matanzas Pass Bridge, Snug Harbor is where a lot of locals go when they want seafood without the Times Square crowds. The dining room and deck sit right on the water beside the marina, and the shrimp boats and charter fleet come and go all evening. Dolphins are regular visitors in the pass, and it is not unusual to see one surface a few yards from your table.
The kitchen keeps it simple and fresh. Grouper, which they will grill, blacken or fry, is the thing to get, along with the bacon-wrapped shrimp that regulars come back for, crab cakes and a good clam chowder. Steaks and chicken are there for the non-fish eaters. Portions are generous and prices are fair for a waterfront table.
It is quieter than the beachfront places, which is exactly why we like it for a relaxed dinner. Ask for a table on the deck and aim for the hour before sunset. Reservations are wise in season. Five minutes from the house, and boat dockage is available.
