Takoté

Takoté is a small Mexican spot in the plaza near the Walmart on San Carlos Blvd, a few minutes from the house on the mainland side, and it is the answer when you want tacos that taste like tacos rather than beach-bar tacos. It is counter service, a handful of tables, no view and no fuss, and that is exactly the point.

Order al pastor, carnitas or barbacoa on soft corn tortillas with onion, cilantro and the salsas from the bar. The tortas are big and good, the quesadillas are a safe bet for kids, and there are usually a couple of daily specials chalked up. Prices are low enough that feeding a family here costs about what two entrees would on the beach. Horchata and Mexican sodas in the cooler.

It is ideal for takeout back to the lanai, or a quick lunch on a grocery run. Lunch and early evening are the best times; it can run out of popular items late. A good reminder that some of the best food around is a few blocks off the tourist track.
