The Whale is one of the landmarks of the Estero Blvd strip, a three-story beachfront restaurant and bar that was rebuilt from the ground up after Hurricane Ian and came back bigger and better. Every level has a view of the Gulf, and the rooftop Lookout Lounge is now one of the best places on the whole island to watch the sun go down with a drink in hand.
The menu splits between fresh local seafood and slow-smoked barbecue, which is a combination that works surprisingly well when the group cannot agree. Grouper, shrimp and oysters on one side; brisket, ribs and pulled pork on the other; plus burgers, salads and a kids’ menu. There is a full bar on every floor and live entertainment nightly, from solo acoustic to full bands at the weekend.
For sunset on the roof, get there early; the rail seats go quickly. Dinner downstairs is more relaxed and easier with kids. It is walkable from Times Square and a five-minute drive from the house. Parking is behind the building and along the street.
