Southwest Florida International Airport, known as RSW, is the closest major airport and sits about a 25 to 35 minute drive from the island, depending on traffic and exactly where on Fort Myers Beach you are staying. It has good direct flight coverage from most major U.S. cities, especially in winter high season when airlines add capacity for the snowbird crowd. For most guests, RSW is the easy, obvious choice.
If you are flying from a city without a direct RSW connection, Tampa International Airport is a workable alternative, roughly a two-hour drive north. It is worth comparing flight prices and total travel time between the two before booking, since a direct flight into Tampa can sometimes beat a connection into RSW, even with the longer drive after landing.
Once you are on the ground, a rental car is genuinely useful here, more so than in a lot of beach destinations. While Fort Myers Beach itself is walkable once you are settled, getting to and from the airport, running to a grocery store for the week, and exploring anywhere beyond the immediate island are all easier with your own car. Rideshare is available but can be slow and expensive during peak times, particularly on busy winter weekends.
Driving down from elsewhere in Florida or from out of state is also a common option, especially for guests bringing a full carload of beach gear or traveling with pets. Interstate 75 runs the length of the state and connects easily to the local roads leading onto the island, and the drive itself is straightforward with no tolls to worry about on the final approach.
One practical note for arrival day: Fort Myers Beach can see afternoon traffic backups getting on and off the island during peak season, so if you have flexibility, an earlier arrival tends to be smoother than a late-afternoon one.
